In an engine cooling system, the main task of releasing or dissipating heat from the coolant is the task of the radiator. Hence, a radiator such as the Mercedes 560sl radiator can be considered as the most important component of the engine cooling system. The radiator is a thin metal box that is typically located in between the engine and the automobile grille. An engine radiator is always integrated with a radiator fan. The radiator fan blows air on the radiator to facilitate the dissipation of heat. Flowing air has a cooling effect on the surface of the radiator. Instead of simply radiating heat, the heat is transferred or conducted through the flowing air.

When the radiator becomes too old, it starts to deteriorate. It may start to leak and fall apart. The main reason for deterioration is typically corrosion. Corrosion is sometimes cause by the coolant itself. The coolant may become acidic when it boils. Sometimes, when the heat is too great to be rapidly dissipated, the coolant boils. A boiling coolant may become acidic, eating away tidbits of the radiator itself. On the other hand, corrosion may come from elsewhere such as the interior walls of the coolant reservoir. However, the corrosion may also come from the interior part of the engine. Corrosion may clog the tubes of a radiator such as the Mercedes 560sl.

Engine heat is regulated by a radiator such as the Mercedes 560sl by utilizing the principle of thermal conduction and radiation. In terms of thermal conduction, heat is taken away from the radiator by the air that is blown by the radiator fan. This is conduction because the air molecules conduct or absorb the heat of the radiator. On the other hand, thermal radiation does not require any medium. Even without air, the thermal energy of the radiator can be radiated by the radiator.
